The Nathan Rauscher Quintet will be performing songs from Joni Mitchell’s Shadows and Light (1980). In 1978, Mitchell began to record the album Mingus, an effort made in collaboration with and dedication to acclaimed jazz musician Charles Mingus. The following year, Mitchell took Mingus on the road, leading to the September performance in Santa Barbara that became Shadows and Light. Join them as they enter the intersection of these two monumental artists with tributes to “Edith and the Kingpin”, “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat,” and explore the story of this wonderful music.
The Nathan Rauscher Quintet is a band based in St. Louis presenting programmatic concerts of music themed around influential artists and albums. Past concerts include tributes to Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters, John Scofield’s Dark Blue, and Wayne Shorter’s Speak No Evil. Jazz musicians tend to play music from the early 60s and prior, but this ensemble offers refreshing performances of music released in the late 60’s and on, exploring the catalogs of John Scofield, Freddie Hubbard, and The Brecker Brothers. Featured: Connor Low on guitar, Blake Mickens on bass, and Steven Johnson on saxophone, all behind the fabulous vocals of Debby Lennon.
